The leaders of Mexico and Spain appeared to differ on possible solutions to the political crisis in Venezuela at a press conference in Mexico City on Wednesday.
Mexican President Andres Lopez Obrador reiterated his appeal for dialogue between the Venezuelan government and opposition, but insisted on no preconditions.
Meanwhile Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who was visiting the Mexican capital, called for talks between Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido that would lead to elections.
Spain, France, Germany and the United Kingdom have said they would be ready to recognise Guaido if Maduro does not hold free elections by February 3.
The US and several Latin American countries have already recognised the opposition leader as head of state.
Russia, China, Turkey and Mexico have all publicly backed Maduro.
