Oculus Quest Unboxing and Review - Is It Worth it?

Oculus Quest Unboxing and Review - Is It Worth it? when it comes to VR headsets, I still sometimes struggle to find where it fits in the ecosystem of how we consume content. The Quest is a VR headset that could possibly change that for me; It's portable to take anywhere with me, has a decent resolution and doesn't need a separate computer for it to run; you can also have a room scale environment without the need for external sensors, but as a result it does add a little weight if you're planning on wearing it for prolonged periods of time. Out the box, you get everything you need to get started including a charger, glasses spacer, a pair of touch controllers, manuals and the VR headset itself.

On the headset, you have the power button, volume rockers, two 3.5 mm headphone ports, although the built-in speakers are also loud enough for use at home where it's not too loud, four cameras/sensors so you don't have to use external ones. On the inside, the foam used is super soft on the face and easy to wipe in case you're the sweaty type. To keep it secure on your head, you have some Velcro straps that keep the Quest snug on the face and it's fully adjustable to fit any head size. Under the lenses, you have a focal length adjusting slider so if you normally wear glasses like me, you'll probably need to slide it till things look clear, remember you can use the glasses spacer too if you still need to use it with glasses on.

The touch controllers come with batteries inside, you just have to pull the tabs before using it then you're ready to go through the setup process. You will need to download the Oculus app on iOS or Android to link the Quest to your account and activate it. The touch controllers are very ergonomic, they have a wrist strap for action gaming too so you don't go throwing it at someone and the controls might take some initial getting used to, but once you get used to it, it's very straight forward and becomes a thing of second nature.

Onto the Quest's performance, it's essential to know that the Quest is a VR gaming headset first, before other entertainment, for example, you can browse the web, watch youtube videos, facebook videos, even browse Instagram like a library of images and more, but where it really matters is when you hit your games library.

The Quest has an OLED display panel with 1440 x 1600 per eye resolution, runs on a Snapdragon 835 processor and it's not the latest processor from Qualcomm, but it is a step up from the 821 used in the Oculus Go.

Once you've set it up, you will need a gameplay area that's a minimum of 2 meters x 2 meters or the recommended 6.5 feet x 6.5 feet and thanks to the new Oculus Insight technology, which uses ultra wide-angle sensors on the side of the headset, as well as computer vision algorithms, to translate your movements into VR with what Oculus calls inside-out tracking, you will be able to roam around depending on your room scaled.

I also love the Quest's guardian safety system, it makes it really ideal for small spaces, it allows you to draw boundaries like a wall and when you break that boundary, its camera activates so you can see the real world. You can also quickly and easily change this at any time, should you have more space to dedicate to it after the fact.

The Press unit I have here came with a few games, but But Oculus tells us that when the VR headset officially launches, you'll have 50 apps to choose from which is more than enough if you ask me. The Quest lasts between 2 hours to 2 hours and 20 minutes with a lot of gameplay. It's worth mentioning that as the Quest approached empty battery levels, you may experience some slight glitching of frames, although charging will take about 2 hours to get it back to a hundred per cent.

You can use your Oculus Quest while it charges using the provided extended cable, but it will likely charge slower while you do so and thanks to its fan cooling system, it won't overheat if you play with it while charging.

64GB - £399, 128GB - £499
