Max Holloway vs Dustin Poirier
(Interim Lightweight Championship Bout)
Watch all Highlights of the MMA Fight between Max "Blessed" Holloway and Dustin "The Diamond" Poirier from UFC 236 "Holloway vs Poirier 2" in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
------------------
DUSTIN POIRIER (49-46 X 3) DEF MAX HOLLOWAY BY UNANIMOUS DECISION
Not the same fight as it was in 2012, but Dustin Poirier won again against Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 236 in Atlanta’s State Farm Arena. He was earning the interim UFC lightweight title via unanimous decision after a 5 Round performance of blood, sweat and tears.
“I feel like I’m in a dream right now,” said Poirier, who will now facing 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. “It’s been a long time.”
Scores were 49-46 across the board for Poirier, he is now 25-5 with 1 NC. The UFC featherweight champion Holloway, falls to 20-4.
Poirier first rocking Holloway, and Holloway returning the favor short after. And while Holloway landed some hard hands on his opponent, Poirier hurts the Hawaiian with a little bit over three minutes left, and putting Holloway in deep trouble. Poirier shot all he had on Holloway, the featherweight champ survived and Poirier’s power was becoming an issue.
Holloway bounced back one round later and began to land shots as the two stood in the pocket, but later, Poirier’s power again made an appearance and he rocked Holloway again just before the end of the round.
Holloway’s face was really busted up from the shots and punishment of the previous two rounds, but “Blessed” didn't stop throwing, and later at round three, Holloways volume punching attack wasn’t being answered by Poirier.
Poirier got a takedown early at round four, but he wasn’t able to keep his opponent down for long. It was Poirier emerging with a cut and Holloway continuing to throw strikes. Poirier soon got his second breath, opened up a nasty cut on Holloway’s forehead, but there was no sign to quit at Waianae’s finest.
The pace didn’t slow down at start of round five, with Holloway throwing at a greater clip while Poirier countered. Later in the round, Poirier controlled matters in the clinch, with a Featherweight-Champ unable to break free, having given everything he had. When it was over, Poirier had done enough to finally put (Interim-)championship gold around his waist.
Poirier will now get a Title-Shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov.
