The Indian Premier League 2019 final took a decisive turn after CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was adjudged run out by third umpire Nigel Llong in what could be termed a very close call by the English umpire.

With CSK chasing a low target of 150 runs to win the match, Mumbai Indians bowlers turned the game around by picking up the wickets of Suresh Raina (8) and Ambati Rayudu (1) in quick succession. Captain MS Dhoni walked in to bat with the score on 73/3 and the match hanging in balance.

On the fourth delivery of the 13th over bowled by Hardik Pandya, Shane Watson hit one on the leg side and completed a single. The throw from mid-wicket at the bowler’s end went deep into the field as no one was backing up and Dhoni decided to run on the overthrow. Ishan Kishan knocked the stumps with a direct hit and Dhoni’s bat was judged to be on the line.

The umpire took his time to make the decision as the camera angles created confusion as to whether a small part of Dhoni’s bat was over the crease or not. Eventually he decided not to give the advantage to the batsman and deemed the video footage conclusive enough to give Dhoni out.

Dhoni’s dismissal pegged CSK back further. Although Shane Watson played a great knock of 80 runs, the duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga held their nerves in the final two overs to take Mumbai Indians to victory by just 1 run.
