This is the first of five lectures on the question of idleness. I begin with Cicero's principle "otium cum dignitate", roughly translated as "idleness with dignity" and point out that for Cicero this was already difficult to achieve. Ultimately, the lecture series will ask the question how dignified experiences of idleness are possible today.
