We need to have that flexibility to maintain a wide range of motion in our joints, with out that our muscles can shorten and become tight
If you dont take time to stretch properly then when you call on the muscles for any activity, they are weak and unable for the full extension. This could end up in high risk of joint pain, strains and muscle damage.
As a trainer I always make sure that my clients take time to stretch.
