Tottenham player ratings vs Borussia Dortmund: Vertonghen outstanding, Son superb. Tottenham have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a superb 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Son Heung-min opened the scoring in the Round of 16 first leg, latching onto Jan Vertonghen’s pinpoint cross just seconds after half-time.

Vertonghen then doubled the home side’s advantage with a thumping volley from Serge Aurier’s cross, with the Belgian impressing in an unfamiliar wing-back role.

Substitute Fernando Llorente added gloss to the scoreline with a header late on, putting Mauricio Pochettino’s side in a dominant position ahead of the second leg.

Express Sport has rated how the Tottenham players performed during their Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund – do you agree?

GK: Hugo Lloris – 8

Blocked from Christian Pulisic early on before flinging himself across goal to keep out Dan-Axel Zagadou’s header.

One nervy moment dealing with a shot from Thomas Delaney but excellent for most of the match.

RWB: Serge Aurier – 7

Went in the book after 12 minutes for trying to to remove Pulisic’s shorts as he struggled to deal with the winger’s pace.

Got forward well on occasions and whipped in a couple of dangerous crosses, including the ball for Vertonghen’s goal.

CB: Juan Foyth – 5

Excellent start with some nice touches in his own box but was lucky not to be punished after his mistake let Pulisic in.

Vital block on Zagadou’s header allowed Lloris to complete a save just before the break.

CB: Davinson Sanchez – 6

Looked vulnerable against the pace of Jadon Sancho and was lucky to avoid giving away a foul after clipping the Englishman’s heels outside the area.

Also got away with a nervy moment when he fluffed a clearance in the first half but comfortable otherwise as Tottenham controlled much of the second half.

CB: Toby Alderweireld – 7

Made several strong interceptions as he marshalled an make-shift back line well.

LWB: Jan Vertonghen – 9

Deployed in an unfamiliar position but excelled at wing-back, hurtling up and down the flank all evening.

Provided a perfect ball for Son’s goal and went on one marauding run before getting excited and blazing over the bar.

Then popped up in the right place to double the lead with a superb volley and cap an outstanding performance.

CM: Moussa Sissoko – 7

Barrelled around the pitch making a nuisance of himself, although Pochettino will not have been happy with the amount of fouls the Frenchman conceded.

Got stronger as the game progressed.

CM: Harry Winks – 6

A tidy performance from the young midfielder, keeping Spurs ticking over and dovetailing well with Sissoko to maintain momentum.

Let down by a couple of his passes into the frontmen, but showed good vision.

CAM: Christian Eriksen – 5

A difficult night for the Dane, who never quite made things happen in a crowded midfield.

Fluffed one excellent opportunity to cross for Son and rarely got space in the final third, but did take the corner for Llorente’s header.

ST: Son Heung-min – 8

Tottenham’s biggest threat with lightening pace and excellent movement in behind the Dortmund rearguard.

Took his goal excellently and now has nine in 11 matches against the Bundesliga outfit.

ST: Lucas Moura – 5

Combined well with Son and showed brilliant technique with a couple of ferocious volleys.

Decision-making was poor on occasions but plugged away and looked more of a threat as the game opened up.

SUB: Fernando Llorente (on for Moura, 83 mins) – 7

Scored minutes after his introduction with a brave header.

SUB: Erik Lamela (on for Son, 89 mins) – N/A

Allowed Son a standing ovation.

SUB: Victor Wanyama (on for Sissoko,
