This is a tray, I made for my niece.
I started off by making grooves in 2 inch wide maple boards on my table saw in two passes, to fit the 1/4 inch thick bottom of the tray, Also checking and making sure that the bottom fits in the grooves nice and snug.
I then cut the sides of the tray from these grooved pieces at 45 degree angle on the ends for mitered corners.
I cut 2 long and 2 short pieces, because I was making a rectangular tray.
Assembly of the tray was pretty straight forward. Just gluing and nailing all the pieces together.
I wiped away the extra squeezed out glue with wet rag while assembling.
Then I filled all the nail holes and gaps with wood filler and sanded everything smooth.
Then I gave the tray 3 coats of latex paint in turquoise color, sanding between each coat.
Next was the most fun part, which was doing decorative painting and stenciling a peacock pattern in off white color, which popped up against dark turquoise very nicely.
I painted very simple handles for the tray in the same color as itself, so that the main focus is on the peacock pattern, not anything else.
I then plugged the screw holes and gave the tray 3 coats of varnish, which I should have done earlier but somehow had forgotten about altogether.
