A crying girl cannot be consoled by lemonade sales or a cute doggie.

Can a child, age 2, act? How did I get my daughter to cry? Well, I had planned to shoot the first half of the spot before lunch when both children were fed, happy and rested. Then, when they were hungry for lunch give them Doritos and hope they'd ravenously eat them, and if lucky witness some goofiness or conflict. But my daughter got soaked with ice cold lemonade and by the time she was calmed down and her dress was laundered and dry it was too close to lunch and she was too upset to participate in the shoot. After lunch she was ready to nap, and not even a cute doggie could console her. We just kept rolling three cameras, and the Lady with the Doggie, Joanie Marx, was ready for anything. A week later, we shot the final scene of the spot, with well rested, fed and happy children. When Joanie asked for an extended scene for her reel, I had lots of crying footage to intercut with Joanie and the Doggie. As a parent, I think it's quite funny, but my poor daughter was quite miserable at the time. She can laugh about it now of course. The final spot wasn't exactly as scripted, but we made the most of the performances we got, knowing how unpredictable kids can be. Hope you enjoy it, Ian
