Can Costochondritis Be Brought On By Stress?
Costochondritis is a name doctors use for inflammation of the cartilage joining your ribs to your breastbone. Costochondritis is not caused by heart or lung problems, as many people fear when they experience it. It can, however, result from stress. Most often, though, it is brought on by a blow to the chest, lifting heavy objects, intense exercise, or an illness that made you cough and sneeze. Costochondritis pain can range from annoying to very painful, but it's not dangerous.
If you suspect that emotional distress is causing costochondritis, it's important try to determine the source of your stress. That's not always easy to fix. But meanwhile, regular exercise, muscle relaxation, and meditation may help.
Pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can reduce discomfort temporarily. You can also help ease pain by using a hot, wet compress or heating pad. Use this with or without a medicated skin cream, gel, or rub.
If you do not start to get better in the next 2 days, see your doctor. He or she may recommend some specific exercises, or prescribe something stronger than ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
